Did you know that only 8% of people achieve their New Years resolution?
So what is the secret of the 8% of people the actually achieve their goals? Goal Setting. Goal setting and achieving is definitely something that I have been able to do by taking a very systematic approach to setting and achieving setting, making resolutions possible.
In 2014, I resolved to and lost 80 pounds. In 2015, I resolved to and got my online business up and running. I don’t talk about these things to brag but only to show you that it is totally possible for you to achieve your big goals as well. So today I am going to show you some of the mistakes that I often see people make when they set their goals.
- The goals are not stated in the past or present state. Your subconscious mind is a rather interesting and powerful tool. If you state goals as if they have occurred or as if you actually already have them, your mind does everything possible to align and actually achieve them. You know I am all about mindset work so, that obviously is where I always start.
- The goals are not specific enough. “I want to make more money this year” is not as powerful as “I want to earn x by December 31, 2016”. Being clear about exactly what you want to accomplish is key again tapping into that subconscious mind.
- The goals are not time bound. Did you notice in the example above there was a specific end date? When I started goal setting I learned that it was important to have this end date and so I would write my goals like this but I never really understood the importance of why. So then I learned that the key is to have a timeline leading up to the due date.
- Lack of support. So now you have your perfectly crafted, clear and concise goal but you are still struggling to achieve it. So what gives? This one is pretty obvious but not often talked about or more importantly actually acted upon. Accountability is probably one of the biggest factors to achieving goals. The problem I see often is people will choose your spouse or BFF as an accountability partner. Yeah its great if you can work on your goal together but when the going gets tough they are more likely to let you slide because they love you and would rather let it go then start an argument. So find a coach, mentor or friend that will actually hold you to your goals.
- Lack of systems. Systems are a simplified way to take the steps necessary to reach your goals. For example, if you goal is to lose weight one of the things you would need to do is cook at home more. So how would you simplify that so you can keep up with that task if you hate cooking and work late in the office a lot? Well, you could use the crockpot and meal plan. That is an example of a system it basically simplifies and breaks down the goals into action steps that you would need to do to make being consistent easier.
These are some of the mistakes I often see when it comes to goal setting. So again state your goals in the past or present tense, set specific and time-bound goals, get support and set up systems to help you achieve your goals.
