What is a business coach anyway?

What is a business coach anyway?

Since I work with moms who are new to the online business space, I often get asked what a business coach is. So today, I want to share with you what a business coach is and what a business coach is not. And a little bit about how I support my clients in their business. Not all business coaches provide the same level of support so if you are looking to work with a different business coach ask them how they would be supporting you before you hire them.

A Partner In Crime

I love to think of my role with my clients as a business coach as a partner in crime. I help my clients with the strategy piece to create a business that fits their life (kids and all!). I am there to support them with their business by being there with them to celebrate their wins, deal with the difficult parts (like hiring/firing or even when you get that private message and you are like “what do I say?”)  and helping them figure out what to do next.

Being a partner in crime is really about creating a strong relationship and supporting moms in their business. Its about teaming up to create a business plan that is both profitable and works for you. And it’s about being smart about what projects you take on and what you say “no thanks” to.

Not A Babysitter

One of the biggest things that I help clients with is focusing on the stuff that will actually grow their business and make them money. Which means keeping distractions (like shiny object syndrome) at bay. But the things is, a coach is not a babysitter. So I can implement the best accountability system I know (which is on Trello of course!) and follow up mid week to see how you are doing but if the work is not done you will not get the results. Hiring a coach (or anyone else) does not guarantee you results in your business. It requires doing the work.

Lets go for 1-4

A Mentor

A business coach is a mentor. Someone who has been where you currently are and is just a few steps ahead. My approach to business coaching is being open and honest with my clients about the mistakes that I have made and helping them to avoid the same mistakes. Which is a great way to shorten the learning curve saving you time and money. I have also found that with business coaches that I have hired, I have had the best results with coaches that are only a few steps ahead of me because I feel like they get me compared to a coach who is way to far ahead and can no longer remember the little struggles that feel huge at the time.

According to dictionary.com “a Mentor is a wise and trusted counselor or teacher.” I love this as a definition for a business coach because trust is so important in a coaching relationship. I have talked with people who say they feel like they cannot be themselves around their coaches or cannot tell them everything that is going on in their business. This is not the ideal in a coaching relationship because without trust it’s really difficult to make the progress you want to make in your business.

Not a Magic Bullet To

Earning Thousands

Before you hire a coach, know that there is no magic bullet that will help you to earn thousands of dollars. No business coach, No program, No certification can help you to make thousands of dollars overnight. It takes consistency, strategy and work. This is why the support piece is critical so you can be consistent, so you can do the right work instead of the busy work and so that you avoid wasting time on things that don’t matter.

Sometimes we get into this mindset that if I had a certain coach or if only I bought this program that will show you how to make thousands of dollars on Instagram, then that would be the big break. And honestly, that is why, with many of the online course investments I made in the last year I felt…well, jipped.

You see, there is no cookie cutter method. Your business, your personality, your situation and everything about you is unique. Your business and situation is unique and a tailored strategy that fits your needs, what you actually want to do and what you are good at is what I have seen work best with my clients.

I use the Tim Ferris approach to business. We run various experiments to see how things pan out and if they go as planned great and if not we can see what worked, what didn’t and make tweaks and even run new experiments. When you think of business in this way there is no such thing as failure only lessons.

Business is a series of experiments. There is no failure, only lessons. Click To Tweet

To recap, a business coach is a trusted mentor that supports you, helps you with strategy and shows you the way (so you can avoid the mistakes in your business). They can help you to shorten the learning curve and help you feel supported and confident in your business. A  business coach is not a way to make thousands of dollars instantly or to hound you to get your work done. Ultimately a coaching relationship is two people teaming up to make your business the best it can be. For more information about business coaching click here.
